The Old town in Rhodes is surrounded of a
a very large wall which the johannits
build on the byzan foundation. The wall is
4 km long and is considered as a
piece of masterwork within the middleage
achitecture. It is 12 m wide and against
the landside it is surrounded by a 30 m
wide moat. Today it has the same
proportion as in year 1522.

The grandmasters palace was build in the
year 1300 as a detached fortress with
connection corridors to the town- wall. In
the time of the turks the build- ing was
used as a prison. Under a hea- vy
thunderstorm in 1856 it became on fire
which released a tremendous explosion and
800 inhabitants died.

The
italian architect Del Vecchi completed the
reconstruction in 1925 and it was the meaning
that the palace should have been a
summercastle for King Viktor Emanuel III
and Mussolini, but none of them ever used
the castle. |
In the Old Town you will find a labyrinth
of small alleys, small squares,
byzan churches, cafees, restaurants, bars,
discotheques and a lot of small fascinating
shops. Absolutely worth a visit when
you go to the city of Rhodes.
